When first starting with this assignment, I had no clue which direction I wanted to take it. However, after doing the pop quiz in the audition, I was immediately drawn to putting heavy delay, echo, and reverb effects on to my sounds. By doing so, I was able to create a sound space with a lot of atmosphere and emotional effect. While doing the pop quiz, I realized I was connecting really heavily to the sounds and effects that I was using as they mimicked the feeling of dissociation, depersonalization, and anxiety that I experience often. The soundscapes start off relatively normal, but distortion and effects slowly build into the sounds as they start to layer over each other. The effects let the sound bleed out into the entire soundscape creating the feeling of confusion and uncertainty, where the sounds feel close yet also distant. I wanted to replicate the feeling of dissociation and being overwhelmed to the point where you can take sounds in, but can’t decipher or break them down to understand them. I purposefully wanted the audience to feel disoriented and confused, not being able to understand what's going on and while understanding there is a lot going on around them. I also decided to turn up the volume and intensity of the effects at the end to show how these feelings can become really overwhelming, distracting, and disruptive in life.
